FAQ
Q: At what age can people have orthodontic treatment?
A: Healthy teeth can be moved at almost any age. Both children and adults can benefit from orthodontic treatment.
Q: Why should children have an orthodontic screening no later than age 7?
A: By age 7, enough permanent teeth have come in and enough jaw growth has occurred that the orthodontist can identify current problems, anticipate future problems and alleviate parent's concerns if all seems normal. The first permanent molars and incisors have usually come in by age 7, and cross bites, crowding and developing injury-prone dental protrusions can be evaluated. Any ongoing finger sucking or other oral habits can be assessed at this time also.
Q: What causes orthodontic problems (malocclusions)?
A: Most malocclusions are inherited, but some are acquired. Inherited problems include crowding of teeth, too much spacing, extra or missing teeth, and a wide variety of other irregularities of the jaws, teeth and face. Acquired malocclusions can be caused by trauma, finger habits, airway obstruction by tonsils/adenoids, dental disease (cavities) or premature loss of baby teeth. Whether inherited or acquired, many of these problems affect not only alignment of the teeth but also facial development and appearance as well.
Q: Why is orthodontic treatment important?
A: Crooked and crowded teeth are hard to clean and maintain. This may contribute to conditions that cause not only tooth decay but also eventual gum disease and tooth loss. Other orthodontic problems can contribute to abnormal wear of tooth surfaces, inefficient chewing function, excessive stress on gum tissue and the bone that supports the teeth. When left untreated, many orthodontic problems become worse. Treatment by a specialist to correct the original problem is often less costly than the additional dental care required to treat more serious problems that can develop in later years.
Q: Is Invisalign an appropriate orthodontic treatment for my teenager?
A: Like most treatment questions, the answer is that each case is a little different. However, Invisalign is a viable treatment option for any patient who has all of their permanent teeth erupted. For a teenager with the twelve-year molars completely erupted into the mouth, it is very likely that Invisalign could be used with excellent results. By utilizing the latest in computer-aided technology, we are able to straighten teeth with a clear plastic thermoformed material that is virtually invisible. And yes, it really does work! Finding an orthodontist who has significant experience with the technique is crucial to the success of each individual case.
Q: How long will orthodontic treatment take?
A: In general, active treatment time with braces ranges from one to three years. Early treatment procedures, may take only a few months. The actual time depends on the .growth of the patient's mouth and face, the cooperation of the patient and the severity .of the problem.
